Failure to Appear (FTA) - is serious and occurs when a defendant or respondent does not come to court as directed by a summons or a court order issued by a Judge. When you “fail to appear” in court the Judge usually issues an arrest warrant (or “capias”) which can have serious consequences.
Aside from being arrested, you can fined, imprisoned, your bond could be forfeited and, depending on the jurisdiction and the nature of charge for the hearing that you missed, you can even be charged with the separate Misdemeanor or Felony of Failure to Appear which could carry up to a year in jail for a Misdemeanor or a five year prison sentence for a Felony in Florida.
